Chonkstep offers a floating Hyprland drop-in for Omarchy
Chonkstep is a community Wayland compositor aimed at Omarchy users who want floating windows instead of Hyprland’s tiling default. The repo describes it as a drop-in for Omarchy’s stack—alpha software, not full Hyprland parity.
Chonkstep is a Wayland compositor and window manager built as a Hyprland drop-in for Omarchy, with responsive floating windows underneath the usual Omarchy desktop.
You keep Omarchy’s menu bar, applications, themes, keybindings, and desktop services. Chonkstep takes the window management layer: floating windows, optional layouts, native decorations, and a desktop menu that follows Omarchy.
Concrete example from the README: right-click the desktop for Chonkstep’s native menu (populated from Omarchy’s menu tree), and right-click a titlebar for window commands; theme changes through Omarchy still drive decorations and wallpaper.
“Drop-in” is the integration target, not complete Hyprland feature parity. The project calls itself alpha software, documents IPC and config gaps, and says Hyprland can stay installed alongside it.
The current release is 0.6.1. On an Arch/Omarchy machine the README’s path is clone the repo, run ./scripts/install.sh, then set desktop = "omarchy" in ~/.config/chonkstep/config.toml and read the quickstart before picking the session at login.
Release notes and binaries live on the project’s GitHub releases page. Treat it as community alpha: useful if you want floating window management on Omarchy, with the limits the docs list.
