Omarchy now boots from the M6 Mac mini’s internal drive, with Ethernet and GPU still to come

Joshua Warren went from a kernel sitting in RAM to a full Omarchy install on Apple’s newest chip in a matter of days, with agents rebuilding drivers along the way. DHH’s verdict: “We can fix everything.”

The M6 Mac mini runs Omarchy. “Linux on the M6 Mac Mini, Day 5 – success!” Joshua Warren of the Omarchy M team posted on X on October 21, 2026. “Omarchy is installed on the Mac Mini’s hard drive. It boots, it runs. Still bringing up accessories, including Ethernet and GPU, so my work’s not done, but 5 days from the macOS About screen to the Omarchy About screen isn’t bad!”

That is a big jump from where things stood on October 19, when Warren had a bootloader and a USB debug console working and the Linux kernel and initramfs loading into RAM, but no shell yet. Now the system lives on the Mac mini’s internal storage and boots from it.

The days in between were spent on the display and the storage. On day three, posted late on October 19, Warren reported that the display coprocessor “now opens its DisplayPort services and powers the PHY without crashing”, but that HDMI still reported “no sink”, so no monitor was detected. A day later, on October 20, came the day four update: “HDMI works, and the Linux kernel boots.” His next target then was getting the storage drivers to bind properly to the hardware, which is exactly what a disk install needs.

None of this comes for free on a brand new chip. “My agents have to reconfigure or in some cases build from scratch every driver because of the updates Apple has made with the M6,” Warren wrote in that same day four post. Just as when he kicked off the bring-up, AI agents are doing the heavy lifting under his direction.

The screenshot attached to the day five post is the classic Omarchy About screen. It lists an Apple Mac mini (M6, J873) running Omarchy 4.0.0 on the edge channel, with a Linux 7.1.12 Aurora kernel build, Hyprland 0.56.2 and the Tokyo Night theme, on a btrfs volume of about 252 GiB with 31 GiB of memory. The graphics line reads llvmpipe, Mesa’s software renderer, which is consistent with the GPU still being on the to-do list.

DHH was quick to cheer it on. Quoting Warren’s post on October 21, 2026, he wrote: “We can fix everything. Even the very latest M chips!”

The M6 is the newest machine on the Omarchy M roadmap. On October 17, Warren wrote that the team’s own Apple Silicon kernel already covers M1, M2, M3 and MacBook Neo machines, adding: “M4, M5 and M6 coming soon.”

The work is not finished, and Warren says so himself: Ethernet and the GPU are still being brought up. But going from the macOS About screen to the Omarchy About screen on Apple’s latest silicon in five days is a serious milestone, and we will keep following the M6 as the remaining hardware comes online.
