Try Omarchy 1.0 for Mac now updates like a native install

The Apple Silicon VM app switches to the official Omarchy M image and ARM package mirror, so you can finally keep Omarchy up to date from inside the guest.

Try Omarchy, the app that runs Omarchy in a virtual machine on any Apple Silicon Mac, just hit 1.0. Eduardo (@martiano on X, themartiano on GitHub) published Try Omarchy v1.0.0 on October 17, 2026, under the heading “Try Omarchy One”, and the big change is under the hood: the VM now boots the official Omarchy M image and pulls packages from the official ARM mirror.

According to the release notes, that “puts us closer to having a matching experience with native Omarchy installations.” In his announcement on X, Eduardo said the Mac image “will soon be released officially for native installs,” and that installing packages through the ARM mirror is now “very smooth.”

The headline fix is updates. “Updates are also solved,” the release notes say: you update Omarchy from inside the VM, just like on a native install, and moving to newer versions of the app no longer requires migrations or VM resets. “Worrying about VM resets is a thing of the past now.”

Because the app now ships the complete Omarchy, packages that were missing from earlier builds are back, such as Omawrite. All existing features remain available. One practical change: the OS image is no longer bundled with the app but downloaded on first launch, because of GitHub’s 2 GB limit per file. You just download TryOmarchy.dmg and the app handles the rest.

Coming from an older version? Update the app, launch the VM and, once it has booted, search for “Import previous VM” in the menu. It copies your files over, and packages you added by hand can be reinstalled with try-omarchy-import-previous --packages.

One caveat worth knowing before you move real work into it: the VM runs Omarchy’s dev channel. You get the newest features, but the release notes warn that “some bugs or glitches could exist.” The stable channel will come once omarchy-mac is officially released.

A quick follow-up already landed. Try Omarchy v1.0.1, released two hours later the same day, temporarily turns nested virtualization off by default to avoid issues on M3 and newer Macs (#369). If you want it back, launch the app with open --env OMARCHY_QEMU_GPU_NESTED_VIRT=1 "/Applications/Try Omarchy.app".

Eduardo called it “the biggest update we’ve released since the initial launch,” and he’s not done: “Over the coming days we will also release other huge improvements to make Try Omarchy as good of a daily driver as a native installation.”
