DHH Backs Omarchy Kids: Linux Aimed at a Child’s First Computer
David Heinemeier Hansson just put Omarchy Kids on the official roadmap: the best possible OS for a child’s first computer. Community builders already have themes, a “Child” setup path, and a Kids plugin shelf in motion.
David Heinemeier Hansson — creator of Omarchy, co-owner and CTO of 37signals, and the force behind Ruby on Rails — just made the kids lane official.
Replying to an Omarchy Kids progress thread on 2 September 2026, DHH wrote: “I love this so much. We’re going to make Omarchy Kids the best possible OS for the first computer (and beyond). As a father of three, this is just mega motivation to make Linux win.” (post)
That is not vibe. That is a named product direction from the person steering Quattro, the Omacom Foundation, and the Core Team. Omarchy already shipped agent-first Linux for builders. Kids Mode aims the same malleable desktop at the first machine a child actually owns.
Who is building it right now
The public peek came from Harris Kenny, founder of OutboundSync (Denver-born CRM sync for outbound teams) and a self-described contributor to Omarchy Kids. On 2 September he broke what he called “Discord containment” with a three-part progress dump:
1. Themes — OldJobobo (Omarchy AIR resident; ship themes include Lumon, Miasma, and Retro 82) is working kids themes. Kenny’s screenshot shows an “OMARCHY KIDS” illustrated desktop collection: Cozy Cafe, Kanagawa, Light in Darkness, Nature of Hope, Osaka Jade, Retro 82, Sleepytime Nord, Tokyo Night. (thread 1/3)
2. Boot / first owner — contributor doomsayerpete is on bootup. The preview asks “Who is this computer for?” with options Me / Child / Another owner — the Child path is the product wedge. (thread 2/3)
3. Plugins — HANCORE (AIR resident, Omarchy Core, Solitude and Last Horizon) added a Kids section to the plugin directory; Kenny reports six plugins already listed (same 2 Sep progress series as 1/3 and 2/3).
Kenny had already floated volunteer calls for Kids Mode earlier (1 September), including confirming DHH was “officially on board.” (earlier call)
Why it matters
Omarchy’s last month was Quattro shell rewrites, security fast-follows, and nine-figure foundation energy. Kids Mode is the first clear bet that this stack should win the first computer, not only the developer laptop. Same Hyprland + Quickshell DNA, same plugin ecosystem — aimed at soft worlds, quiet desktops, and little adventures (the Kids theme tagline in OldJobobo’s grid).
What is not claimed yet: no release date, no version tag, no omarchy.org/news post. Primary sources today are DHH’s X endorsement and the Kenny progress thread. When an official news post or ISO/channel lands, that is the next story.
Until then: Omarchy Kids is real enough for DHH to attach his name and his kids to it — and the community already has themes, a Child owner path, and a Kids plugin shelf under construction.
