The M4 Pro MacBook Pro gets its GPU, speakers, webcam and USB 3 on the Aurora kernel, with Omarchy next

Jonathan Goyvaerts has the 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro running Linux 7.3 with its GPU, all six speakers, webcam and USB 3. His patches are now up for review, and he expects them in Omarchy soon.

Another Apple Silicon Mac is coming to life under Linux. On October 23, 2026, developer Jonathan Goyvaerts posted an “M4 Pro progress” update on X: all six speakers “with Apple’s tuning”, plus the headphone jack and microphones; USB 3 at 5 Gbps on all three USB-C ports; the webcam; AV1 hardware decoding, with 4K60 playback in Firefox; and suspend when you close the lid. All on Linux 7.3.

His post ends with “All PRs up at github.com/aurora-silicon/linux, should be in Omarchy soon.” That timing is his own estimate. For now, none of the pull requests has been merged.

The GPU came first. A few days earlier, Jonathan had posted that he “got Linux GPU acceleration working on an Apple M4 Pro”, and the driver is now up for review as PR #408, which adds the M4 Pro’s GPU (T6040) to the Asahi DRM driver. According to the PR, it was tested on a 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro from 2024 running his daily kernel, 7.3.0-m4.11, where the GPU drives a Hyprland desktop, with Mesa treating it as a G16 GPU.

The PR includes stress-test numbers from the previous daily kernel: 8003 in glmark2 and 12835 in vkmark with Mesa’s single-queue setting, and 8160 and 14967 without it. Every run completed, with no GPU recovery, fault or firmware crash in the kernel log.

The sound is in PR #406, covering the microphones, the six internal speakers and the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The speakers come with protection for their amplifiers: if one amp reports an over-temperature or over-current fault, all six are shut down together. A third pull request, PR #413, keeps other apps, the compositor included, alive when one client stalls or crashes the GPU. It also adds an optional setting that keeps the GPU powered for a moment after work, because on the M4 Pro every wake-up costs about 1.1 ms before a job runs.

The GPU PR lists its limits. It needs a boot loader that sets up the GPU, which Jonathan calls “our own loader”, because m1n1 can’t do that on this chip yet. It only accepts the GPU firmware from macOS 26.6.2 (25G83) and refuses anything else. And Mesa needs M4 Pro support too, with a Mesa pull request still to come.

Joshua Warren, of the Omarchy M team, shared the post with a nudge to his followers: “For those that have been asking me about Omarchy on M4 Macs, check this out!” If you have been waiting to put Omarchy on an M4 Pro MacBook Pro, the pieces are now out in the open, waiting for review.
