The next Omarchy cuts the boot menu wait to one second

A quiet one-second Limine timeout removes most of the loader delay, and a new System menu entry gets you back to the boot menu when you need it.

Omarchy is about to stop making you stare at the boot menu. DHH merged “Boot in 1 second, quietly, with a way back to the menu” into the quattro branch on October 14, 2026, so it’s coming in the next version.

Don’t let the title fool you: this isn’t a full boot in one second. The “1 second” is the Limine boot menu timeout. According to the PR, “Most of the 6.2s loader time at boot is Limine’s menu wait,” and that’s the part being cut.

The default limine.conf now sets timeout: 1 together with quiet: yes. The menu stays hidden by default, but pressing any key during startup still brings it up.

Existing installs get the same treatment through a migration, with care for people who’ve already tuned things. If you’ve set your own timeout, it’s kept, including TIMEOUT: no. Quiet mode is added only where it’s missing, and running the migration again changes nothing.

Since the menu is now out of sight, the PR also adds a way back: a new Reboot to Boot Menu entry in the System menu. It runs omarchy system reboot-boot-menu, which reboots through the normal graceful session exit and shows the Limine menu on the next start.

DHH is upfront that one check is still missing. Under “Needs a person,” the PR says one real reboot is needed to confirm that Limine honors the one-shot request and the keypress reveal, something that’s “Not verifiable statically.” The automated tests for the defaults, the migration, the power action and the menu all pass.

It’s part of a wider push on boot speed in quattro. On October 13, DHH merged #15175, which mounts binfmt before registration “to shorten boot by about a second,” and #15182, which avoids systemd mount-event throttling during boot. According to #15182, the two together brought median userspace startup in VM tests down from 2.413 s to 0.737 s.
