Tokyo Roadster gives the Tesla Roadster the Tokyo Night look, and DHH and Elon Musk noticed
Tom Ballard’s new community theme pairs Omarchy’s Tokyo Night palette with a set of blue-violet Roadster wallpapers, and it got a nod from both DHH and Elon Musk.

“I gave a Roadster the Tokyo Night treatment and now I can’t pick a wallpaper.” That’s how Tom Ballard (@tcballard) introduced Tokyo Roadster on X on October 16, 2026, showing “four of the eight” wallpapers and promising “electric blue” and “violet reflections”. The post has passed 116,000 views and 1,797 likes.
DHH quoted it the same day with a joke about Omarchy’s release pace: “We clearly aren’t releasing Omarchy major versions frequently enough when SpaceX and Tesla can manage multiple, monumental launches worth celebrating between releases! FULL THRUST AHEAD!” (DHH on X). About half an hour after that, Elon Musk replied to Tom’s post with two rocket emojis.
The theme itself lives at tcballard/omarchy-theme-tokyo-roadster and installs in one command: omarchy theme install https://github.com/tcballard/omarchy-theme-tokyo-roadster. According to the README, Omarchy names it theme-tokyo-roadster, and you can switch back any time from the theme picker.
Colors come straight from Omarchy’s built-in Tokyo Night palette: a #1a1b26 background, #24283b raised surfaces, #a9b1d6 text, a #7aa2f7 periwinkle shell accent and #bb9af7 violet highlights. Blue handles focus, selection borders, bar activity and notification countdowns, while red is kept for errors. The README says it targets Omarchy’s Quattro branch, with overrides for the bar, controls, launcher and menus.
The X post teased eight wallpapers, but the repository now ships ten: wall-ride (the default), lineup, hover, ramp, inverted, rear, diffuser, studio, a ROADSTER event poster and Starlight, a 16:9 starry-sky scene. Omarchy cycles through the whole set. Each one is a lossless PNG with an 8192-pixel longest edge.
Tom is upfront about how they were made. The README describes them as AI style edits of Roadster photographs and artwork, enlarged afterwards, “not native 8K generations”. The credits file adds that the original photographer, source and redistribution licence “have not been established”, and that the MIT license covers the theme’s code and configuration, not the images.
Tom was already busy before this: he’s the author of Familiar Desktop, and Tokyo Roadster is built on his own omarchy-theme-template starter. That evening he posted a last batch of tall wallpapers, calling it “final one from this theme, I promise” and summing it up as “tesla roadster 🤝 omarchy tokyo night”.
Tokyo Roadster isn’t on the official extra themes page. If you prefer the car’s red, @IM0001GT has submitted two other Roadster themes to omarchy-site, Roadster and Roadster Dark, both built from Tesla’s photographs in Ano White with taillight red accents. Both pull requests (#571 and #572) were still open at the time of writing.
