Omacom Foundation’s First Hire: Kernel Dev Krzysztof Wilczyński Leads Omarchy Kernel

The Omacom Foundation just did the thing foundations are supposed to do with a war chest: hire someone who can move the stack. On September 3, David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) announced that Krzysztof Wilczyński (@kwilczynski) is the foundation’s first full-time employee, leading work on the Omarchy Kernel with a mandate for performance, compatibility, and security. Wilczyński is not a random résumé drop. He is a longtime Linux kernel developer who co-maintains the PCI Endpoint subsystem and the native PCI host bridge and endpoint drivers — the plumbing that ties Linux to your GPU, NVMe, and Wi‑Fi. He also reviews the kernel’s newer Rust PCI work. Maintainer activity is easy to verify on Ratatoskr (kwilczynski@kernel.org). Before going deep on the kernel, he spent years in systems engineering around Kubernetes and container runtimes (LinkedIn).

That hire lands inside a bigger same-day Omacom push. Patronage is now open to everyone at four tiers — $16, $256, $2,048, and $8,192 — each with its own badge, social card, and wallpapers designed by Omarchy Artist in Residence OldJobobo (patron badges, DHH on badges). DHH’s open-patronage thread: patronage is now open to all. The foundation’s framing: twelve Founding Patrons, four Distinguished Patrons, two Distinguished Corporate Patrons, and $13 million already committed in under two weeks. Powers-of-two tier framing came from Distinguished Patron Max Schoening (DHH credit); first $2,048 patron is the Comp AI team via Lewis Carhart (DHH).

Same day, DHH also posted that Omacom is accelerating spending (X): everything raised this year is meant to be spent over the next three years — with $13M committed, that points at yearly budgets in excess of $4 million for 2027, 2028, and 2029. Money already in motion, per the patronage post: exclusive sponsorship of Hyprland, premier sponsorship of Quickshell and mise, Artists in Residence, infrastructure, plugin competitions (including a new $10,000 contest “coming soon”), and now a full-time kernel lead. Wilczyński is also joining Omarchy Core, so he helps set distro direction, not only kernel patches.

Why this matters: Quattro already proved demand. The foundation proved capital. The first full-time hire proves they will convert both into people who ship hardware-facing Linux work — new laptops and ancient ThinkPads alike, out of the box, locked down. That is the Linux-on-the-desktop bet with a named maintainer on payroll.
