Omakey is now open source: use your phone as a real keyboard and touchpad for Omarchy

Dmytro Gladkyi has open-sourced Omakey, an Omarchy plugin plus phone apps that turn an Android phone or an iPhone into a Wi-Fi keyboard and touchpad. It’s aimed at machines like the Steam Deck that have no physical keyboard.

Omarchy developer Dmytro Gladkyi announced on X on October 10, 2026 that he has open-sourced “the full set” of Omakey: the widget for Omarchy and SteamOS, the Android app as an APK, and an iOS app you build yourself.

The idea is simple: “Use your mobile as the real keyboard with Omarchy and SteamOS (or any other distro).” In a follow-up post, Gladkyi explains that typing on a device with no physical keyboard, or only an on-screen one like the Steam Deck, is “a nightmare.” With Omakey you set it up once, pair your phone, and get a touchpad and keyboard. You keep the standard keyboard you already use on your phone, in portrait mode.

On the desktop side, the omakey-omarchy-plugin repository adds a bar widget and a small daemon, omakeyd. The daemon creates a kernel-level virtual keyboard, so Hyprland shortcuts, games, terminals and the lock screen all see real key presses, with Esc, F1–F12, Super and media keys included. Your keyboard layout applies as usual.

According to the README, the phone sends one small packet per key over Wi-Fi, and that typically takes a few milliseconds on a home network. Pairing uses a QR code that holds a 256-bit key, and every packet is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, so nobody else on the Wi-Fi can type on your machine. There is also a touchpad mode, Caps Lock state shown on the phone, and a shared clipboard.

Installing it takes one omarchy plugin add command, which needs Omarchy 4 with the Omarchy shell. The script builds the daemon and installs Rust if it’s missing. The Android app is available as an APK from the omakey-mobile repository. The iOS version has to be built from source.

Omakey pairs with Gladkyi’s OmaDeck project, a set of fixes and tweaks for running Omarchy on the Steam Deck. The plugin is released under the MIT license.
