Omasnap replaces Tensaku as Omarchy 4.5’s screenshot and annotation tool

Omarchy 4.5 swaps Tensaku for Omasnap, a native Wayland capture overlay with vector annotations, OCR and scrolling captures, and existing installs migrate on their own.

Screenshots in Omarchy 4.5 come from a new tool. The Omarchy 4.5 RC3 release notes, published on November 2, 2026, list “Replace Tensaku with Omasnap for screenshots” under Improvements, and sum it up in one line in the highlights: “Omasnap takes over screenshots from Tensaku.”

The change landed in pull request #9446 by @ryanrhughes, merged into the quattro branch on September 21, 2026. According to the PR, Omasnap becomes “the implementation behind omarchy screenshot“, while the existing capture modes, the positional copy/save forms and the legacy OMARCHY_SCREENSHOT_DIR override keep working. Omasnap also takes over when you reopen an image from imv or from clipboard history.

Omasnap is an MIT-licensed C++ project that describes itself as “a native Wayland screenshot and annotation overlay designed for Omarchy and Hyprland.” According to its README, it captures the focused monitor before its overlay appears, “so the editor never appears in its own screenshot.”

Here’s what the README lists:

  • Smart selection by default: drag a freeform region, click a window to crop it, or click open space for the full monitor, with explicit region, window, fullscreen and scrolling-region modes still available.
  • Captures that save and copy to the clipboard right away; in Omarchy, the manual says a notification with a thumbnail then offers Open or Edit.
  • Annotations kept as movable, resizable vector layers: arrows, shapes, highlighter strokes, numbered markers, text and secure redaction.
  • One-click or drag-region OCR, with the recognized text copied to the clipboard.
  • A cut tool, backdrops, a recents shelf of the last five captures, and native-pixel export on scaled monitors.

Existing installs don’t need to do anything. The PR’s migration adds Omasnap first, updates only the stock imv edit binding (including symlink-managed dotfiles), then drops Tensaku from the system. Tensaku also leaves the base package set for new installs. grim, slurp and hyprpicker stay installed, since, according to the PR, recording, OCR, QR and colour capture still use them.

The 4.5 release notes also list a fix for scrolling captures. PR #16715 by @falkoro, merged on October 28, 2026, explains that every frame grabbed during a scroll capture “comes out solid black” because of a no_screen_share rule on Omasnap’s Hyprland layer. The fix drops that rule, with one trade-off spelled out in the PR: “the Omasnap overlay now shows in screen shares while it is open.”

Omasnap already showed up here when Omarchy picked up an extra screenshot shortcut. To try it now, switch to Update > Channel > RC, then run Update > Omarchy. Just remember that RC3 is still a release candidate, so a backup or a snapshot is a good idea first.
