Monologue is Omarchy 4.5’s one-key webcam recorder with a built-in editor
Omarchy now ships its own camera recorder: press Space to record, pause and resume the same take, then trim it and save an MP4 without leaving the app.

Omarchy 4.5 comes with a new default app for anyone who records themselves on camera: Monologue, Omarchy’s own webcam recorder. The official Omarchy 4.5 release notes sum it up in one line: “Monologue records your camera with one key, themed to match your desktop.”
DHH added it as a default app in pull request #13449, merged on September 27, 2026. According to the PR, you pick a camera and microphone once, press Space to record, and press it again to pause and resume the same take. Monologue records at the camera’s highest resolution and shows a live microphone meter while you talk.
The real trick is what happens when you stop. The take opens straight in a built-in editor, where you can split, trim and remove clips, then save an MP4. The PR notes that the original recording is kept until you discard it, so while you’re editing, a cut is never final.
As the release notes put it, “With Monologue for recording and Omacut for trimming, new installs no longer ship OBS Studio and Kdenlive.” We covered that change in our post on the apps dropped from 4.5.
The app has kept moving since the PR landed. Monologue 0.3.0, released on September 28, 2026, made a take exist only while you’re working on it: starting a new recording or quitting deletes it, Monologue asks to save first if there are unsaved changes, and the Recordings history is gone.
The latest version, Monologue 0.3.1, came out on October 7, 2026. If the app crashes or is killed with a take open, the next launch reopens that take in the editor, as long as it was recorded within the past hour. Infrared face-login sensors also no longer show up as extra cameras in the camera menu.
Already running Omarchy? A migration installs Monologue on existing machines when you update, unless you removed the preinstalled apps. You can also add it yourself with omarchy pkg add monologue.
